オーストラリアは留学生に人気の国ではありますが、残念ながら毎年いくつかの学校が閉鎖しています。以前のコラムでも取り上げた Global College の閉鎖も影響大きかったですが、昨年暮れは Meridian College の閉鎖が話題になりました（以下記事参照）。
● Tenth school for overseas students collapses
THE reputation of Australia’s $16 billion overseas education industry has been dealt another blow by the sudden collapse of the Global Campus Management Group, which ran four colleges in Sydney and Melbourne with about 3000 students.
The collapse is particularly embarrassing for the Federal Government, which has been working hard to rebuild the industry’s battered image, as hundreds of the the Sydney-based students were placed in the school by the Department of Immigration after their previous school, Global College, went broke last year.
そして先週金曜日の夕方から話題になっているのは GEOS Australia の閉鎖です（以下記事参照）。
● Eight English language schools in limbo
Eight English language schools operated in Australia by the GEOS group have gone into voluntary administration, leaving about 2300 foreign students unsure of their future.
Justin Walsh and Adam Nikitins of Ernst & Young have been appointed administrators to nine companies operating the schools in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Cairns.
They have about 390 employees and international students from a number of different countries.
● 英会話のジオス、豪州校が任意管理に＝授業は停止、学生は２３００人
【シドニー時事】オーストラリアで英語学校８校を展開するジオスの豪州９法人が任意管理に入り、授業が停止されたことが２９日、明らかになった。管理人に指名された会計事務所アーンスト・アンド・ヤング（Ｅ＆Ｙ）が、財務状況や事業継続のための資金調達能力などを調査。２月１日夕までに学校を再開できるかどうか発表する。
ジオスは、シドニー中心部とその近郊、メルボルン、アデレード、パース、ブリスベーン、ゴールドコースト、ケアンズに学校を展開。Ｅ＆Ｙによると、従業員数は約３９０人で、日本を含むさまざまな国から約２３００人の学生を受け入れている。
これは世界中にあるキャンパスを構える日本の ジオス のオーストラリア海外校8つがいきなり閉鎖になったというニュースです。現在2300人の学生が在籍していますが、今週から授業はなしです。
Ernst and Young informed students and staff of each centre on Friday afternoon that “the school will temporarily close until such time as we can establish its ability to fund ongoing operations. Over the coming days we will be working with all stakeholders to establish whether the school can be reopened. An announcement about the ability to reopen the school will be made no later than 17:00 (EST) on Monday 1 February 2010.”
上記のような話もありましたが本日月曜日も何も進展がありませんした。学生はいつもどおり他の英語学校への編入の手続きがなされる予定ですが、いつもどおり時間がかかることでしょう。
さて、日本の ジオス はどうなるのでしょうか？
